Understanding International Document Authentication
To use your U.S.-issued documents in a foreign country, they must be validated to ensure they are recognized as authentic. The process required depends entirely on the destination country.
-
Apostille: If your destination country is a member of the 1961 Hague Convention, you need an Apostille. This is a simplified, single-step international certification.
-
Authentication & Legalization: If your destination country is not a member of the Hague Convention, you need a multi-step Authentication and Legalization process. This usually involves certification by state or federal authorities, followed by final approval from that country’s embassy or consulate.
